The Pearl of Fear

I stand, I stand in awe of you.
I stand, I stand in awe of you.
Holy God to whom all praise is due.
I stand in awe of you.

Are you afraid of God? The bible says in Proverbs 9:10 that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, but what does fear mean? Does it mean we should be scared of God and what he can do to us? I think not!

Understanding the fear of the Lord will open windows of blessings for you. The Hebrew translation for the word fear in the passage of scripture above means reverential awe. It's a mixture of fear, veneration, wonder, and admiration according to Valerie Wilson. We should stand in awe of God, His majesty, His glory, and His power. Yes, God is a mighty and strong God who will take vengeance on those who do not obey Him, but that is not why we should fear (reverence) Him.

We should reverence (fear) God because He is our refuge (Deuteronomy 33:27), He does not change (Malachi 3:6), He is everywhere (I Kings 8:27), He is holy (Psalm 9:9), He is righteous (Psalm 11:7), He is the almighty God (Genesis 17:1), and most importantly GOD IS LOVE (I John 4:7-8).

The benefits of fearing the Lord are abundant. By fearing (revering) the Lord we have Him as our refuge (Proverbs 14:26), we possess a fountain of life (Proverbs 14:27), we have knowledge and wisdom (Proverbs 16:16, 19:23), and we have happiness (Proverbs 28:14).

Now, there are two sides to every coin. If we don't fear the Lord there are consequences such as falling into mischief (Proverbs 28:14), being visited with evil (Proverbs 19:23), shortened years (Proverbs 10:27), and having the prosperity of fools destroy us (Proverbs 1:29-32). No bueno.

We must view God in a way that causes us to love (as in the verb) and fear (reverence) Him. God cannot be this genie in a bottle that we whip out every time something goes wrong in our lives. Don't be afraid to approach God with your problems. Don't think that God doesn't care for you. He sees you and He has his hands on you.

Ladies, favour is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but a woman that feareth the Lord, she shall be praised. (Proverbs 31:30).

I encourage you to really dig into the book of Psalms and learn about all the wonderful things the Lord has to offer to those who fear Him. I hope this pearl has helped you look at fear in a different way.
